About SFI Foundation
A non-profit organization established in 1978 to issue and administer standards for the quality assurance of specialty performance and racing equipment.
What is SFI?
The SFI Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit organization established to issue and administer standards for the quality assurance of specialty performance and racing equipment. The letters originally stood for "SEMA Foundation, Inc." but SFI is now fully independent.
SFI has approximately 100 member sanctioning bodies and over 300 individual equipment manufacturers participating in more than 85 specification programs.
How It Works
Equipment manufacturers test and self-certify their products to SFI standards, which are then included in race sanctioning organization rules. Participation is voluntary once a standard is enacted.
Programs are funded by manufacturer licensing fees and donations. Enforcement uses contractual and licensing agreements with inspection provisions.
Who Uses SFI?
Equipment manufacturers are the primary users of SFI standards. These standards are adopted by race sanctioning bodies into their rulebooks, making them requirements for competitors.
Standards are initiated by the SFI Technical Committee, comprised of experts from across the motorsports industry.
Open Process
SFI's programs are open to all interested parties, use technical committees with cross-sector expertise, follow due process procedures, and publish specifications publicly for full transparency.
SFI monitors adherence through certified test reports, periodic spec reviews, and licensing agreements.
